Sheila E and Pops Escovedo receive Lincoln's first "Building Futures" Award

Lincoln's been lucky for a long time. Lucky enough to receive the love, care and attention of its founder, its Junior Alliance, its flower groups and notable donors. Lincoln, some years back, was also lucky enough to receive an extraordinary gift from Ms. Sheila E, who gave the children at Lincoln a complete suite of Mac computers on which the kids were invited to create music. Sheila E, as everyone alive in the time of Prince remembers, is the talented and beautiful drummer in his band. An exquisite performer in her own right, Sheila E has been wowing audiences with her way with the sticks and skins since the age of 3. Sheila and her father, Pete Escovedo, will be honored for their family philanthropy, their legacy of love, their commitment to kids. Sheila and her family have started a foundation to provide the healing tools for art and music programs to kids in foster care and others who suffer from abuse and traumas. Sheila knows this pain from the inside out--as she was sexually abused at the age of 5 by a babysitter, and learned early of the healing power of music. Her commitment and her family's legacy exemplifies the mission of Lincoln Child Center and we are moved to create this first honor, the BUILDING FUTURES AWARD, to capture a bit of the light they cast as they make music and love that matters in the lives of the children and families we serve.

What it's really all about...

What Culinary Stars of the Bay Tasting Extravaganza is really all about is...
Generosity
A Good Time for a Great Cause
Extraordinary Vendors
and a Taste of Summer...

Years ago, as I look through the archives, I see that the Junior Alliance conceived of and created the Taste of Summer event that really brought everyone out to play for the first "picnic" of the summer social season. Culinary Stars is the evolution of that event, and makes a huge impact on what is possible for Lincoln Children and the programs that support them.

This year, as was true for everyone of the eighteen previous events, the TASTES of summer are provided by the bay area's best culinary stars that are both new to the area and those old favorites that make our region what is to those who love food, wine, spirits and song.

This year some old favorites are each offering an exclusive Dinner For Six that features an extraordinary 6 course dinner with wine pairings prepared by the executive chefs at Horatio's, Kincaid's and Skates on the Bay.

Skates on the Bay in the Berkeley Marina will offer a 6 course dinner with wine pairings specially created for a guest list of six by Executive Chef Peter Dominguez. This event will be auctioned as part of the live auction event at the VIP and Celebrity Reception that starts at 6pm.

On the block opposite this exquisite offer will be a similar 6 course meal with wine pairings prepared especially by Executive Chef Doug Braun at Kincaid's Bayhouse at Jack London Square and a third meal for six offered by Executive Chef Ryan Karsten at Horatio's on the San Leandro Marina. The value of these offers is $850/seating of 6.

"We hope to inspire a bidding war between the supporters of each restaurant--and to have some special recognition for the restaurant that wins the war," says Nathaniel Foster, Development Manager for Lincoln Child Center. "All three have been long time supporters of Lincoln and all the money raised goes to support our kids and the programs that serve them."

To get your VIP & Celebrity Reception tickets to be in the room for the LIVE Auction, Please go to the website now: www.lincolncc.org or call Alicia: (510) 531-3111 x 115.

Preparing the Live and Silent Auctions

Today, Nathaniel Foster and I were invited to the Gallery of Anthony Holdsworth: www.anthonyholdsworth.com. Anthony gifted us with stories and catalogs of his latest work--he is the painter, the plein air painter who lives in the scene as he is painting it--capturing the essence of air and light, the presence of the people and spirit of a place. He offers indoor and outdoor painting classes, hosts painting expeditions to Mexico and Italy, and supports the non-profits he believes in by donating his sought after artworks and proceeds from his monthly studio events.

There are two paintings in this year's auction by Anthony--One from his beloved Italy, another from our beloved Oakland. It was one of those magic meetings--being there in his studio--watching his humanity, his love for place, his art of possibility come together in story and gift. We talked about the economy, the fear that for non-profits the government has yet to offer a bail out, the strange sense of national priorities in this crazy time of real people in real need. We talked about what he could afford to give--to make possible the generosity of others. We talked about how it might seem a crazy time to organize a fancy event--and yet, this is the time an event like this is needed the most. We are moving forward, preparing live and silent auctions, honoring important people, inviting old and new friends alike to come together under the stars and remember--people need us to have a good time, to afford to be generous, to consider what we can afford to give so that we might start a generosity ball--like a snowball--that just gets bigger with every little bit we can each add to it.

At Lincoln we are in a mode of thinking about hands and hearts--and, when I tell the story of Rebecca McWade, our founder who found a baby on her doorstep, I like to say this:
"in that moment, she decided for herself what one heart could hold, what two hands could do, and she picked that baby up". We're a long way from babies left on other people's doorsteps in America--and yet, we are always at that crossroads of generosity. Each, for themselves, must answer, what can my heart hold? what can my hands do? And if your heart is like Anthony's and you have the hands of an artist, you can donate what you create. And if your heart likes a good night out for a good cause use your hands to buy tickets to attend the event by clicking on our website and reserving your place with us, under the stars at Chabot, May 14, 2009: www.lincolncc.org.

Culinary Stars of the Bay Tasting Extravaganza - May 14, 2009

Each year for the past 19, we've been gathering the bay area's best food, wine, spirits and song, and celebrating under the stars at the Chabot Space and Science Center--having a good time for a great cause. In this lean year, with the economic news all about a downturn, gathering like this is more important than ever. This event gathers friends of Lincoln, old and new, and shines a spotlight on what we really do here: make a safe place for vulnerable kids to get what they need--what is not provided by any other place--what can not remain possible without your support.

See, Lincoln, started when Rebecca McWade found a baby on her doorstep in 1883, remains an almost secret place in the Oakland Hills where kids who truly have no other alternatives can be taken in, loved back to health and returned to the world with a stronger sense of hope and possibility--a new resolve for life. 26 of our kids live here with us all the time--they are court appointed wards of the state and have no other home. 77 come to school with us--in our day treatment program--and find the skills to calm and center themselves enough to learn. Over 1500 bay area families are supported by our Kinship services, Wrap, and school based programs where Lincoln professionals are providing the mental and behavioral health services to keep things like Columbine from happening in Contra-Costa and Alameda Counties. We offer hope, health and healing to kids in crisis and families in need.

This event--the Culinary Stars event--is the major fundraiser for this agency. It's a critical year--where we, like every other agency, are losing funding from our traditional sources. Please, join us under the stars, and wish on them with us--that this economy turns around, that our kids get plugged back into mental health, that our families are re-united in health and wellness, that our world gets better for everyone in it. Tickets are on sale through our website: www.lincolncc.org.
